In keeping with the fashion of the time, many churches were built throughout the 14th and 15th centuries, helped by the excellent availability of local building stone throughout the county.
All our historic churches have their own special features, history and unique stories and many accolades have been bestowed on many places of worship.
- Built in 680 AD, All Saints Church in Brixworth is one of the finest and largest built Anglo Saxon churches in England.
- All Saints Church which dominates Northampton town centre was once described as the stateliest of its time, outside of London.
- Sir Adrian Boult once said that the acoustics in Rothwell Holy Trinity Church were better than any other concert hall in Europe. It also boasts of a bone crypt, unearthed in the 18th century.
- St Peter's Church in Oundle has the tallest spire in the county, standing a magnificent 210 feet high.
- Sir John Betjeman said that St Mary the Virgin Church in Wellingborough was the finest church in England of modern date.
- In 1754, the present spire replaced the old church tower with five bells in Great Houghton. This gave rise to the little, local ditty: 'Great Houghton, wicked people. Sold their bells to build a steeple!'
