Thrapston is a market town and civil parish in North East Northamptonshire. It is situated on the River Nene, about 10 miles north of Kettering and 12 miles south-east of Peterborough, and at the time of the 2011 census, had a population of 6,239.
The town has a long history, with a mention in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Trapestone. It was granted its charter in 1205, in exchange for two palfreys (horses)!
The town's name means 'Farmstead or town of a man named Thraepst'. Another source suggests the individual name is related with Old Germanic 'Trapsta', 'Trafstila' and 'thrafstjan' meaning 'to comfort:, henceforth 'farmstead or town of a man named Draefst or Draepst'.
Thrapston is a thriving community, with a number of schools, shops, restaurants, and pubs.
